How do I get to the retreat destination?

Book your plane ticket to San Jose’s Juan Santamaria International Airport (code SJO), Costa Rica’s capital city. Optionally, you can fly to the other international airport in Liberia (code LIR) which is in the NW of the country.

Plan to arrive in Playa Santa Teresa, our retreat location, by mid/late afternoon on Sunday.

To transfer to Santa Teresa, you can travel by domestic flight or ground shuttle.

A domestic flight is the fastest and easiest travel option. The airstrip closest to our retreat town of Santa Teresa is Cobano. The domestic airlines that service Cobano from San Jose or Liberia airports are Sansa (www.flysansa.com) and Green Airways (www.costaricagreenair.com; only from San Jose). The flight is about 30 minutes. (Note for return guests, Tambor is no longer the airstrip for Santa Teresa.)

From Cobano it is a 30-minute drive to Santa Teresa. We will arrange for a driver to meet you on your arrival and bring you to the retreat and also for your return flight out (The transfer cost is not included in the retreat. Cost is about US $50 per trip and divided by passengers. The amount is subject to change.). If you arrive at the same time as other guests, we will arrange for you to share the ride and cost.

Shuttle services between San Jose or Liberia (pick-up at airport or hotel) and Santa Teresa depart 1-2 times daily depending on the season. From either location, the approximate travel time is about five hours. If coming from San Jose this includes a scenic 70-minute ferry ride across the Gulf of Nicoya.

Complete the form below and we’ll email you the full retreat and travel details.

When does the retreat begin and end?

Check-in is at 3:00 PM on Sunday. The retreat starts in the late afternoon at 4:30 PM with a welcome yoga class followed by an orientation and dinner.

The retreat ends on Saturday after breakfast. Check-out is at 11:00 AM. No activities are scheduled on this day.

What type of yoga is taught in the classes? How much yoga experience do I need?

The retreat is led by an experienced yoga teacher who guides you through revitalizing, informative, and grounding yoga classes.

The yoga classes are a combination of centering conditioning movements and slow-flow vinyasa to enliven one’s energy, enhance flexibility and mobility, and build strength. Classes are structured so that participants may learn and advance their practice. Each class is specifically sequenced around a theme based on the Hatha tradition.

We have one 1.5-hour yoga class each day and two 1-hour afternoon classes.

All levels of yoga experience are welcome, from beginners to more seasoned practitioners, and to those who are in the professed, “I can’t touch my toes” or “I am so out of practice” state!

The precept is: Come as you are. Start where you are.

What is the weather like in Santa Teresa?

The dry season or summertime in Costa Rica is from December through April. The climate is tropical and Pacific coastal temperatures average from mid-80s F to low 90s F during the day and low-mid 70s in the evenings. The rainy season, or green season, is from May to early November. June through August and November is when there is typically less rain and a second high season for visiting Costa Rica. This is also a great time to visit with the landscape being vibrantly green and lush! Temperatures are similar to the summer months.

We only offer our retreats at the most favorable times of the year.

What are the meals like?

The retreat starts with dinner on day one and ends with breakfast on the last day. Catered meals are at our villas with private dining and one or two dinners are at restaurants in Santa Teresa where we can enjoy a fun, local atmosphere.

Meals are prepared by our chef and are a healthy, primarily organic, fusion style.

Special diets such as vegetarian/vegan, gluten/dairy free, and allergies can be accommodated. If you have a severe allergy or very strict dietary restriction please check with us before booking.

What are the optional activities?

A variety of tours and activities are offered outside of the retreat package. Reservations can be made upon arrival.

Any questions? Send us a message in the form below.

What is the average group size?

The retreat is limited to 12 persons to ensure quality and personalized attention for each guest. There is a minimum of six persons required to run a retreat. Many guests are single/solo travelers. Please feel very welcome to come on your own. It will be an incredible experience!

Can I stay at the retreat hotel extra nights?

You are welcome to arrive earlier or depart later than the retreat dates and stay at the retreat property. Please contact us to check on availability and we will send you the nightly rate.

What is the payment and cancelation policy?

Payment and Cancelation Policy

A non-refundable US $600 deposit confirms a reservation. Full payment is due 45 days prior to the first date of the retreat.

Should a guest need to cancel 45 days or less prior to the first day of the retreat, for whatever reason, we will not be able to provide a refund or credit for any payment.

No refund or credit will be given for arriving late, departing a retreat early, or for meals/activities in which one does not participate. In the unlikely event Vajra Sol needs to cancel a retreat for a non-force majeure reason a full refund will be given.

If force majeure (e.g. pandemic, natural disaster, government travel restrictions, etc.) causes a retreat to be canceled, alternative dates will be offered to reschedule the retreat within one year and 100% of the guest payment will be transferred to the rescheduled retreat. In this case, when a retreat cannot be held due to causes beyond our control, no refund of payments can be provided.

We strongly advise on the purchase of travel insurance at the time of booking your retreat in the case of any unexpected events or changes to your plans before or during your trip.

Check the travel insurance provided by iTravelInsured which is affiliated with IMG (International Medical Group) to see if it meets your needs. You may customize what you need for travel and/or international emergency medical insurance. Check with your home health insurance provider to see if and for what you are covered when traveling outside your home country.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions and we will be happy to provide additional information.

Guest Reviews

trip advisor

“After only 6 days, I was surprised by how I felt both stronger from surfing and a consistent yoga practice, and relaxed and renewed. I am already recommending Vajra Sol to friends and family, and intend to return for another week in paradise.”

- Elizabeth, San Francisco

“This was my third retreat with Vajra Sol and it just keeps getting better. It truly is an adventure: from your trip to Santa Teresa through the jungle, to surfing in the warm waters of the Pacific on the most stunning beach, to the outdoor yoga sessions surrounded by the sounds of Costa Rican wildlife in the distance…there’s really nothing else like it.”

- Greta, Ontario

“I can’t say enough about Sandra and her attentiveness to each of us; she has a very special gift. I came on the retreat looking to put some things in the past and begin anew; I left with a true sense of renewal and I haven’t stopped smiling since I got back. Pura Vida & Namaste!

- Steve, Connecticut
